A new partnership between Service NSW and the City of Sydney will help small businesses in the heart of the city set up shop faster and with less hassle.

The City of Sydney has joined Service NSW’s business program which includes free personalised over the phone support from Service NSW’s Business Concierge and a digital platform which outlines the regulations and licences needed to start and run a small business.

Service NSW is widely known as the place to go for a driver licence, Seniors Card and so much more. It is also a one-stop shop for business and this program is all about helping small businesses, in particular cafes, restaurants and small bars.

Yoash Dvir is one of the thousands of small business owners who have used the service.

Growing up in Israel, Yoash was surrounded by cafes selling the chickpea based dip hummus. When he moved to Sydney two years ago he was disappointed to discover that hummus bars didn’t exist in the city.

Yoash set up a market stall to sell his hummus with falafels and salad to Sydneysiders. The stall was such a success that he decided to open his own cafe in Darlinghurst.

But Yoash didn’t know where to start, so he enlisted the help of Service NSW and was assigned a Business Concierge.

“Everytime I didn’t know what to do, or I had a question, I emailed the Business Concierge and got an answer straight away,” Yoash said.

“And they were always in contact, following my progress. I found the follow up amazing. The more I spoke to the Business Concierge, the more I felt motivated to move forward. It was like I felt accountable to someone. I didn’t want to let him down.”

Service NSW helped Yoash with his Food Safety Supervisor Certification, registering his business with council and outdoor dining.

“The service was amazing. I would recommend it to anyone looking to start a small business.”

Simply Hummus has been open since March and is already a neighbourhood favourite.

“I’m happy to say I’ve already sold more than 4000 bowls of hummus and 12,000 falafels.”
