Apply for the Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS)

If you need to travel long distances for specialist medical treatment, you may be able to get assistance with your travel and accommodation expenses through the Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS). If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can register to join IPTAAS online, by post or via email.

  • your specialist's details
  • journey details (including the expected forward and return dates)
  • whether an escort/carer is medically required.

  1. Check the eligibility requirements.
  2. Select the 'Register online' button.
  3. Sign into, or create your OneGov account.
  4. Complete the online application form.
  5. Enter your payment details.
  6. Read and confirm the declaration.

To be eligible, you must:

  • be a resident of NSW or Lord Howe Island and also be eligible for Medicare
  • live more than 100km from the nearest treating specialist (you may also be eligible if cumulative journeys to your treating specialist exceed 200km within a week)
  • require specialist treatment that is not available locally
  • claim all benefits available through a private health fund prior to applying to IPTAAS (if applicable)
  • not be eligible for any other government travel assistance schemes.
