Introduction
If you need a safety inspection report (pink slip) to renew your NSW car/light vehicle registration, Transport for NSW will only accept an interstate inspection report if you're more than 50 kilometres from the NSW border.
The report must be from either:
- an inspection station authorised by an interstate authority
- the interstate registering authority, or
- a member of the Australian Automobile Association (AAA).
The inspection report from the interstate examiner must cover details similar to those for NSW safety inspections. Individual items including braking, lighting, steering and suspension must be defined as having been inspected and passed as suitable, and the vehicle assessed to be in an overall satisfactory roadworthy condition.

Heavy vehicle inspection reports
Heavy vehicle safety check inspection reports issued by interstate authorities are not accepted for heavy vehicles subject to Transport for NSW's Heavy Vehicle Inspection Scheme (HVIS) inspections.
Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Scheme (AUVIS) inspection reports are valid for 42 days from the date of inspection. This means that you’ll need to use the report to conduct a transaction with Transport for NSW within 42 days of having the inspection.
