Introduction

How you renew your driving instructor's licence will depend on whether your current licence is still active, or if expired, when it expired. Driving instructor licences expire after 5 years, and a renewal notice will be mailed to you about 2 months before this.

What you'll need

For all renewals, regardless of when the licence expired:

  • your driver licence and driving instructor number
  • your Working With Children Check Number
  • 2 passport size photographs
  • a full traffic record from an Interstate Licensing Authority (if applicable)
  • your method of payment.

In addition:

  • if your licence has not expired by more than 90 days:
    • the Driving Instructor's Licence Renewal form (to be completed in the presence of a customer service officer)
    • to complete and pass a Driver Instructor Knowledge test in the appropriate class (test will be in English without an interpreter).
  • if your licence expired between 90 days and 2 years ago:
    • the Application for Licence under Driving Instructors Act 1992 form
    • to complete and pass a Driver Instructor Knowledge test in the appropriate class (test will be in English without an interpreter)
    • medical practitioner to complete the medical check section of the application form
    • eye specialist or optometrist report (if applicable)
    • your contact lenses or glasses (if applicable).
  • if your licence expired more than 2 years ago:
    • the Application for Licence under Driving Instructors Act 1992 form
    • to complete and pass a Driver Instructor Knowledge test in the appropriate class (test will be in English without an interpreter)
    • to complete and pass a Driver Instructor Driving test in the appropriate class
    • to complete and pass an Impart Knowledge test in the appropriate class (test must be conducted by an approved provider)
    • medical practitioner to complete the medical check section of the application form
    • eye specialist or optometrist report (if applicable)
    • your contact lenses or glasses (if applicable).

How to renew

If your licence has not expired by more than 90 days:

  1. Download your Driving Instructor's Licence Application for Renewal – PDF
  2. Gather all the required documentation and visit a service centre to complete your renewal.

If your licence expired between 90 days and 2 years ago:

  1. Download, print and complete Application for Licence under Driving Instructors Act 1992 – PDF 
  2. Make sure you have all the required documentation and any additional items (if applicable), and then visit a service centre and lodge your application.

If your licence expired more than 2 years ago:

  1. Download, print and complete Application for Licence under Driving Instructors Act 1992 – PDF 
  2. Make sure you have all the required documentation and any additional items (if applicable), and then visit a service centre and lodge your application.

Things to keep in mind...

  • A licence cannot be renewed if it has expired by more than 90 days.
  • After 90 days an application for a new licence is needed, however you don't have to undertake a further driving instructor training course.
