For Caroline Buckingham, the perfect Saturday night involves listening to live music at a small bar with a good wine selection. But, she had always wished there were more bars where she could listen to bands in the Dulwich Hill area. Caroline decided to open Butchers Brew Bar.

She wanted to create a bar that would bring neighbours together, give locals a welcoming place to listen to live music and support local musicians. With little hospitality experience, she didn’t know exactly where to start - so she sought help. Caroline contacted Service NSW’s Easy to do Business program. A Business Concierge guided her through the process of starting up the bar.

“Starting up a business for the first time was a bit terrifying. It’s not very clear what steps you need to be take and what order they need to go in,” she said.

“I spoke to the Business Concierge if I needed help with regulations or getting paperwork right. Things like navigating compliance, making sure the right authorities are notified.”

“The team behind it is very proactive too, contacting me with further offers of assistance; I found that very refreshing and highly recommend the service.”

Easy to do Business is a free NSW Government service which includes a digital platform and a personalised phone service which helps aspiring business owners set up, run or grow their small businesses faster and more easily.
