Get an adult or child/youth Opal card
Opal cards are smartcard tickets used on public transport in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, the Hunter and the Illawarra.
Opal cards can be ordered online. Adult (16 and older) and child/youth (under 16 and eligible school student) Opal cards can also be bought at selected retailers.
You can also pay adult fares on the Opal transport network using a credit card, debit card or connected device.
For more information about Opal cards and public transport fares refer to the Transport for NSW website.
Get a concession Opal card
Concession Opal cards give discounted fares on the Opal transport network. Some concession Opal cards require you to travel with your proof of concession entitlement, such as a Transport Concession Entitlement Card.
Refer to public transport concessions and subsidies.
Manage your Opal card online
An Opal account allows you to manage your card online, so you can:
- set notifications and alerts, for example, to get a message when your balance is low
- transfer the balance across cards
- change your registered address and email
- top up and set auto top ups
- update payment details
- block further transactions on your card (if it has been lost or stolen)
- view recent activity and travel rewards.
To manage your card log in to your Opal account or create an account.
You can link your account to the Opal Travel app and manage your card through the app.
Top up your Opal card
Your Opal card balance shows how much money you have left on your card.
When you tap on or off with your Opal card, the card reader will show your balance.
When the balance is low, you need to top up your Opal card.
You can top up your Opal card:
- at a top up machine (found at most transport hubs)
- at an Opal card seller
- on the Opal Travel app
- online.
When you top up online it may take up to 60 minutes before the topped up balance can be scanned at an Opal card reader.
Lost or stolen Opal card
If your registered Opal card has been stolen or lost, report it online to block your card from being used.
Once your card is blocked, you will need to contact Opal Customer Care to transfer the balance to an active Opal card.
