Introduction

All visitors to the State Library of NSW can use the computers, read the newspapers and magazines, and get general help from staff.

You'll need to apply for a State Library card to:

  • borrow and request books and other material
  • access e-books and e-resources
  • print, scan and photocopy
  • book a study room.

Eligibility

Anyone can apply for a library card. You can apply for this free card online.

What you need

You will need an email address to:

  • sign up for an account, and 
  • to access some of the services and collections.

NSW residents may also need to provide a valid NSW residential address to access the full range of 

How to apply for a card

  1. Go to Join the State Library of NSW.
  2. On the page, select the option 'Become a Library Member'.
  3. Enter your personal details.
  4. Follow the instructions to set up an account.

What happens next

  • You'll receive your library card number via email (next business day). 
  • You can choose to have your card sent by post or you can collect it at the State Library.

Non-residents (people who live outside NSW)

If you're not a NSW resident:

  • you'll need to pick up your card from the State Library
  • you can only access online resources and collection items from within the State Library.

At the State Library of New South Wales, you only need a library card if you are using the Library in person, or if you are accessing our eresources from home. Only residents of New South Wales can access our eresources from home.
