Introduction

Anyone can apply for a card and anyone can visit the State Library of NSW during opening hours to use computers, access the internet, read newspapers and magazines, and get general help from staff.

Eligibility

Anyone can apply for a library card. You can apply for this free card online.

What you need

You need an email address to:

  • sign up for an account, and
  • access some of the services and collections.

NSW residents may also need to provide a valid NSW residential address to access the full range of services.

How to apply for a card

  1. Go to Become a State Library of NSW member.
  2. On the page, select the option 'Become a Library member'.
  3. Enter your personal details.
  4. Follow the steps to set up an account.

What happens next

  • You'll receive your library card number via email (next business day).
  • You can choose to have your card sent by post or you can collect it at the State Library NSW.

Using your State Library NSW card

You need a Library card for visiting in person to:

Remote eresource access

If you are a NSW resident you need a Library card to access the Library's eresources from home.

Only residents of NSW can access the Library's eresources from home.

If you do not live in NSW

If you're not a NSW resident you:

  • need to pick up your card from the State Library NSW
  • can only access online resources and collection items from within the Library.
