A tattoo master licence allows you to carry on a body art tattooing business in NSW.

If you hold a master licence for the premises and you also perform tattooing procedures at the same premises, you do not need a separate tattooist licence.


You must:

  • be an individual and at least 18 years of age
  • be an Australian citizen or permanent Australian resident (including New Zealand citizen)
  • not be a controlled member of a declared organisation under the Crimes (Criminal Organisations Control) Act 2012
  • not be a member of a prescribed criminal organisation or have been a member in the previous 12 months.

What you need

  • copies of 2 types of acceptable identification documents for yourself
  • Nomination of Premises Manager form
  • for each close associate (if applicable)
    • a completed Close Associate Consent form 
    • 3 types of acceptable identification documents
  • your application fee.

How to apply

  1. Check the eligibility requirements.
  2. Gather your documentation:
    • completed form for Nomination of Premises Manager
    • (if applicable) completed Close Associate Consent form
    • copies of acceptable identification for yourself and any close associates.
  3. Select the 'Apply online' button.
  4. Log in or create a MyServiceNSW Account.
  5. Complete the information.
  6. Attach all the required forms and identification documents.
  7. Enter your payment details.
  8. Submit your application.
