The NSW Department of Customer Service and the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) have collaborated with BDMs across the country to develop the Australian Death Notification Service, or ADNS.

The ADNS provides people with a single online location to notify multiple organisations that someone has died.

When the deceased's details are entered, the ADNS validates them against the Australian Death Check (ADC). The ADC holds all the death registration data recorded by each BDM across Australia.

Once the details are validated, the notifier chooses the relevant institutions and services to inform, and provides their own contact details for any next steps.

Participating organisations include but are not limited to:

  • ANZ
  • Commonwealth Bank
  • NAB
  • Westpac Group, incorporating St George
  • Bank of Melbourne
  • BankSA
  • Optus
  • Telstra
  • Vodafone
  • Sydney Water.

Note: Anyone can be a notifier, but a death certificate needs to have been issued for the person who has died, in order to progress the notification.
