Important information about CTP refunds
  1. You can apply for your CTP refund online between 5.00pm and 8.00am Monday to Friday, from midday Saturday and all day Sunday.
  2. For eligible passenger vehicle owners, your refund will vary between $10 and $120 depending on when you last renewed your Green Slip. If your renewal date was early in 2017, you’ll get a smaller refund. If it was closer to 1 December 2017, you’ll get a higher refund.
  3. A state-wide advertising campaign will commence in late April to ensure all motorists are aware of their entitlement to claim a CTP refund.
  4. You have until 30 September 2018 to claim your refund so there is no hurry. All surplus and unclaimed funds will be returned to motorists through a reduction in the CTP Fund levy next year.

The NSW Government has reformed the compulsory third party (CTP) insurance scheme to reduce the costs of CTP Green Slips for vehicle owners and better support people injured on our roads.

If you were the registered owner of a private vehicle as at midnight 30 November 2017, you may be able to claim a CTP Green Slip refund for insurance policies bought or renewed with a start date before 1 December 2017. Over 4 million NSW vehicle owners will be eligible for a refund as a result of these reforms.

CTP refunds are rolling out now with over 200,000 refunds claimed through Service NSW within the first two days.

The popularity of CTP refunds is placing additional load on our systems. To ensure we can offer customers reliable access to all our services during business hours, CTP refunds are currently available between 5.00pm and 8.00am Monday to Friday, from midday Saturday and all day Sunday. You have until 30 September to claim your refund, so there is no hurry.

You are likely to be eligible for a refund where the private vehicle was registered in:

  • Sydney metro, Outer metro, Newcastle, or Wollongong region and the insurance premium was paid from February 2017 onward
  • Country region, and the insurance premium was paid from May 2017 onward

There is a minimum refund amount of $10 and each refund is subject to an administration fee. If the refund is less than $10 before or after the administration fee has been applied, then the vehicle is not eligible for a refund.

Note: You cannot claim a refund for your motorcycle insurance. Instead, motorcycle owners will receive more benefits under the new scheme.
