Introduction
To become a regulatory food safety auditor, you need to submit an application to the NSW Food Authority.
Eligibility
You must have completed:
- a Certificate IV in Food Science and Technology or related field course
- 40 hours of food microbiology
- all of the following units:
- assess compliance with food safety programs
- communicate and negotiate to conduct food safety audits
- conduct food safety audits
- identify, evaluate and control food safety hazards.
In addition to the above requirements, high risk auditor applicants must also have completed at least one of the following units:
- audit a cook chill process
- audit manufacturing of ready-to-eat meat products
- audit a heat treatment process
- audit bivalve mollusc growing and harvesting processes.
What you need
- the PDF form – 'Application for approval as a regulatory food safety auditor'
- your auditor certificate
- certified copies of your training qualification and valid units of competency
- evidence of your professional indemnity/public liability insurance policy
- proof of identity as indicated on the form
- your payment.
How to apply
- Select the 'Download PDF form' button.
- Complete, print and sign the form.
- Gather the required documents.
- Submit your application with payment by mail, fax or email, to the details on the form.
The NSW Food Authority will contact you within 10 working days.

A ‘certified copy’ is a photocopy that has been compared with the original and endorsed as a true copy by a Justice of the Peace (JP), or a public officer such as a police officer.
