Introduction
A medical procedure is not required for a change of sex application through the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages.
Changing your record of sex
A record of sex is the assigned sex recorded on a NSW birth certificate. If you identify as a different sex to what is recorded, you can apply to have this changed and order a new birth certificate.
If you were born overseas you can apply to have the sex you identify as acknowledged in NSW with a recognised details certificate.
In NSW, a person can choose from the following sex descriptors:
- female
- male
- non-binary
- non-specified.
