It's important to make sure you comply with all environmental laws covering water, land, air, noise pollution and waste management, as outlined in the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 (POEO Act). There are serious penalties if you break any of the laws, and lack of knowledge cannot be used as a defence. Even accidents can result in prosecution.

Everyone involved in your business including owners, managers, supervisors, operators, contractors and subcontractors, needs to understand and comply with the environmental legislation.

It's your responsibility to ensure you've developed an environmental management plan, including training for you and your staff, and completing self-assessment or independent audits of your plan and operations.
