An upgraded NSW Digital Driver Licence will be available to a select group of interested NSW residents in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains area. We're starting with a select group so we can test and improve the experience before we roll out to the rest of NSW.
How to register
If you live in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains, you may be eligible to register:
- Log into the Service NSW app.
- Go to your Digital Driver Licence.
- If early access is available in your area, you'll see an option to ‘Register now’.
What happens next?
By registering, you'll:
- be notified by email when the upgraded Digital Driver Licence becomes available to you
- get early access ahead of wider public release
- help shape the future of digital credentials in NSW.
Note: Registering does not upgrade your licence straight away - it lets us contact you when it's your turn.

How long does it take to be notified that you can upgrade your Digital Driver Licence?
After you register, you’ll be notified in the Service NSW app and via invitation email when the Digital Driver Licence upgrade is available to you. Invitation emails are sent progressively, so timing may vary between individuals. If you have questions about registering for the upgrade, contact us at Digital.Licences@service.nsw.gov.au
What do I need to do to upgrade my Digital Driver Licence?
If you’re eligible for early access and register, you’ll receive an invitation to upgrade when it becomes available. To upgrade, open the Service NSW app, go to your Digital Driver Licence and follow the prompts. You’ll need to verify your identity using 3 identity documents and a face verification check. You need 3 current identity documents:
- NSW Driver Licence or Photo Card
- plus an Australian passport, or an Australian birth certificate, or a foreign passport with an Australian visa
- plus a Medicare card, or Pensioner concession card, Seniors Health Card, or Health Care Card.
Note: If the names on your documents differ due to marriage, separation or divorce, you'll need a marriage certificate to link your documents.
If you already have a NSW Digital ID, you can skip entering your identity documents during this step, which will save you time.
How long does it take to upgrade my Digital Driver Licence?
Upgrading your Digital Driver Licence typically takes 5-10 minutes. It may take a bit longer if you use assistive technology or need extra support. As part of the process, we verify your identity to a higher standard to help protect you from identity theft and fraud.
Do I need a NSW Digital ID to verify my identity when I upgrade my Digital Driver Licence?
No, creating a NSW Digital ID is optional. The NSW Digital ID is a way to verify your identity in a single step in select NSW Government online transactions. If you already have one, you can skip entering your identity documents when you upgrade your Digital Driver Licence, which saves you time. If you don’t have a NSW Digital ID, you can either verify your identity using 3 identity documents as a one-off verification, or you can choose to create a NSW Digital ID as part of the upgrade process. If I don’t register, can I still upgrade my Digital Driver Licence later?
Yes. If you don’t register for early release, you’ll still be able to upgrade your Digital Driver Licence when it’s rolled out across NSW in stages over the next year. We’ll provide information when the upgrade becomes available in your area.
