Introduction
You must display an auxiliary number plate when your rear plate is hidden by a mobility device or bike rack or by a caravan, trailer or vehicle you are towing.
An auxiliary number plate:
- is a smaller copy of the vehicle number plate (252mm x 98mm)
- has the same letters and numbers as the plates on your vehicle
- allows the plate number to be seen clearly when the rear number plate on your vehicle is not visible
- is white with black characters
- has the words 'NSW – Auxiliary' printed on the plate.
If you do not display an auxiliary plate clearly and do not use a working rear number plate light you can be fined.
You can order an auxiliary number plate online through myPlates and either:
- have it sent by post (delivery fee applies) or
- collect it at a Service NSW Centre.
Note: Auxiliary number plates are not issued to trailers, caravans, motorbikes or public vehicles.
