Introduction

You must hold a licence with the NSW Food Authority if your business:

  • handles fin fish, crustacean or cephalopod
  • processes, packages or stores seafood
  • is a wholesaler of seafood.

You can apply and pay for the licence online.

To apply for 5 or more premises, you need to submit a printed application form.

Note: You must not start business operations until you have your licence.

What you need

  • ABN/ACN
  • ASIC company statement showing the director names (if applicable)
  • confirmation of your registered business name (if applicable)
  • certificate of incorporation (if applicable)
  • fishing licence and business number
  • details of the business activities, location and food handlers
  • vessel and beach hauling details (if applicable)
  • wild shellfish collection, processing and storage details (if applicable)
  • your payment
    Note: The licence fee is based on the number of food handlers and premises.

How to apply

  1. Gather the required documents.
  2. Select the 'Apply online' button.
  3. Complete the application form.
  4. Submit your application and payment.

You can save and continue your application later, if needed.

If you're unable to apply online, or if you want to apply for 5 or more premises:

  1. Download and complete the Application for a licence for a food business – seafood (excluding shellfish cultivation or harvest) – PDF.
  2. Gather the required documents.
  3. Submit your application with payment by post or email, to the details on the form.

The NSW Food Authority will review your application within 10 working days.

An assessment will be carried out before a licence is approved.
