Introduction

You need to apply for a NSW security clearance licence if you want to have unsupervised access to explosives or security sensitive dangerous substances (SSDS).

Key points about a security clearance licence (SC licence)

  • The licence:
    • is valid for 5 years
    • allows you to work for a supervising licensee who holds the appropriate explosives or SSDS licences
    • does not allow you to obtain, possess, transport, use or handle explosives or SSDS in your own right.
  • You'll need to hold an SC licence if you intend to apply for an explosives or pyrotechnician's licence.

For detailed information on this topic, read SafeWork's Guide for applying for a security clearance.

Note: The licence was previously called Unsupervised Handling Licence (UHL).
