Introduction
To get your provisional P1 driver licence, you need to:
- Successfully complete the Hazard Perception Test (HPT).
- Pass a practical driving test.
The HPT is a computer-based test designed to find out how you react to potential dangers when driving. During the HPT, you use the computer’s touchscreen to show how you respond to real traffic situations, such as if and when you would slow down, overtake, or turn.
You cannot sit your practical driving test until you've successfully completed your HPT.
HPT tests are taken at a Service NSW service centre. A fee is attached, and each time you book an HPT, you have to pay the fee.
To help you study for the HPT, read the HPT handbook.
