Introduction

You must display an auxiliary number plate:

  • when the rear number plate of your tow truck is hidden by the vehicle you are towing
  • at the rear of the towed vehicle or in a way that is clearly visible. 

An auxiliary number plate:

  • is a smaller copy of the vehicle number plate (252mm x 98mm)
  • has the same letters and numbers as the plates on your vehicle
  • allows the plate number to be seen clearly when the rear number plate on your vehicle is not visible
  • is white with black characters
  • has the words 'NSW – Auxiliary' printed on the plate. 

If you do not display an auxiliary plate clearly and do not use a working light for the auxiliary number plate you can be fined.

You can order an auxiliary number plate online through myPlates and either:

What you need

  • your contact details
  • your driver licence number or customer number (if a business)
  • your NSW plate number
  • your fee payment.

How to order

  1. Select the 'Order online' button.
  2. Follow the prompts to order auxiliary plates.

If you cannot order online call 13 77 88 or:

  1. Download and complete the form Number Plates and/or Cancellation of Registration – PDF.
  2. Lodge the form by mail, or in person at a service centre.

What happens next

Your auxiliary number plate will be delivered to your nominated mailing address or service centre approximately 21 days after you order.

If you selected service centre collection you will receive an email when your plate is ready for collection. You must go to the nominated service centre within 28 days of the collection notice email date.

Brake and indicator lights

The brake and indicator lights of your tow truck must be clearly visible when you are carrying a vehicle in the cradle of your tow truck. Use portable lights attached to the rear of the towed vehicle.

Selling your vehicle

When you sell or dispose of your vehicle you must return your tow truck plates and the auxiliary number plate to a service centre.

Returning your auxiliary number plate

You must return your auxiliary number plate to a service centre if:

  • your vehicle registration is cancelled
  • you lose a number plate for your tow truck
  • you surrender your tow truck operator licence.
