If you want to change your name, you can do it online. You can change your name only once in a 12-month period and 3 times in your lifetime.

Changing your surname after marriage or divorce
If you were married or divorced in Australia, you can use your official marriage or divorce certificate to take your spouse's surname or return to your previous surname. Some organisations may not require a formal change of surname. For more information, visit Change your surname after marriage.
Eligibility
You're eligible to change your name if you:
- were born or adopted in NSW or
- were born overseas and have lived in NSW for the past 3 years and
- have not changed your name with any Australian Registry in the past 12 months
- have not previously registered 3 official changes of name in Australia.

- Gather the documents you need, including proof of identity.
- Select the 'Register online' button.
- Complete the online form and payment.

The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages sends change of name certificates by registered post. Certificates cannot be collected at Service NSW Centres.
