What you need to know about the NSW Photo Card

  • Always check the proof of identity requirements before you begin a transaction.
    • You can use a NSW Photo Card to prove your identity in most places a driver licence is recognised.
    • However, you cannot use a NSW Photo Card as identification or in place of a NSW Driver Licence in certain situations, including some online applications.
  • The NSW Photo Card has the same security features as the NSW Driver Licence and shows your name, address, date of birth and photo.
  • The NSW Photo Card is valid for 5 years (or 10 years for eligible customers aged 21 and over).
  • Getting a Photo Card is voluntary. It has the same application process as a NSW Driver Licence.
  • If you apply for a Photo Card at the same time as you apply for, or renew, your driver licence, you'll pay a reduced fee for the Photo Card.
  • When you apply for, or renew, a licence card or NSW Photo Card at a service centre, it will be posted to you at no extra cost. Cards usually arrive within 15 business days.
