Owners of multi-unit residential developments or commercial/industrial buildings or premises will need a fire safety certificate if any of the following apply:

  • the building is new
  • the building has changed use
  • a fire safety order has been issued for the building or premises.

To be eligible for this certificate, you’ll need to have met all the essential fire safety measures listed in your most recent fire safety schedule. 

You must:

  • make sure that an accredited fire safety practitioner assesses all the fire safety measures in your building or premises
  • lodge a copy of the fire safety certificate (together with the current schedule) with Fire and Rescue NSW by emailing it to firesafety@fire.nsw.gov.au
  • display a copy of the certificate in the building
  • submit a fire safety statement to your local council each year.

Note: A final fire safety certificate is required from your local council before a final occupation certificate can be issued for a new or existing building.
