Introduction
You need to have a motor dealer licence if your business includes the buying, selling or exchanging of new or second hand vehicles, caravans, motorcycles or trailers (with a tare weight of more than 250kg).
When you receive your licence renewal notice, you can renew and pay online.
Eligibility
- If you don't wish to renew online, you can visit a service centre.

What you need
- your licence number
- your renewal number (as shown on your renewal notice), or your full personal details
- your payment.
How to renew
- Select the 'Renew online' button.
- Select 'Next'.
- Enter your licence and renewal number as shown on your renewal notice. (If you don't have your renewal number, select 'Don't have?' and enter your name, birth date and postcode.)
- Select 'Next'.
- Confirm the details of your licence.
- Enter your payment details.
- Read and confirm the declaration.
More information
- Tare weight equals the empty weight of your vehicle (also known as unladen weight).
- If you don't renew on time you'll have to make an application to restore your licence, which can be done at a service centre.
- If your licence has expired more than 3 months, you'll need to apply for a new licence to be re-issued.
- You can't trade until your new licence is issued.
