Introduction

To apply for replacement tow truck number plates you need a letter from NSW Fair Trading authorising the replacement. To get a letter call the NSW Fair Trading tow truck licensing team on 13 32 20.

If you still have the old plates you must hand them in before new ones are issued.

If you need an additional number plate to display on the vehicle you are towing you can order an auxiliary number plate.

What you need

  • your proof of identity
  • your letter from the tow truck licensing team authorising the replacement of your faded, damaged, lost or stolen plates
  • your old plates (if you still have them)
  • your fee payment.

If the plates have been stolen you also need a Police event number.

How to replace

  1. Download the PDF form – 'Number Plates and/or Cancellation of Registration'
  2. Complete the form.
  3. Gather the required documents and your plates if you have them.
  4. Submit your application at a service centre.

What happens next

Your replacement number plates will be delivered to the service centre you nominate on the application form about 21 days after you submit your application.

You will be notified when your number plates are ready to collect and told what to bring with you to collect your plates.

If you have not been notified within 28 days of submitting your application, call myPlates on 02 9433 1600.
