Grants and assistance

First home buyers

  • The First Home Super Saver Scheme (FHSS) allows you to make voluntary before-tax and after-tax contributions to your super. You can then apply under the FHSS to have your voluntary savings released to help you buy your first home.
  • First home buyers may be eligible for exemptions or concessions on transfer (stamp) duty under the First Home Buyers Assistance Scheme.
  • If you’re a first home buyer who is buying or building a new home, you may qualify for a $10,000 grant under the First Home Owner Grant (New Homes) scheme
  • Key workers buying their first home, single parents, older singles, and victim-survivors of domestic and family violence may be eligible for the Shared Equity Home Buyer Helper initiative to own property with the NSW Government.
  • The First Home Buyer Choice (FHBC) initiative closed on 1 July 2023. If you opted in to FHBC, you will continue to pay property tax for as long as you own your property and will remain exempt from transfer duty on that purchase.

Single people

If you're a single parent or single person aged 50 or over, you may be eligible for the Shared Equity Home Buyer Helper initiative to own property with the NSW Government.

Other things to consider

Leaving property in your will

When you buy a property, you are increasing your assets. With a will in place you can ensure that when you die, your assets will be distributed according to your wishes. If you die without leaving a will, your assets will be distributed according to a formula set by legislation.

Swimming pools

Swimming pools must be registered. If you're looking to buy a property with a pool, ensure you're aware of the laws that apply.
