Toll Relief is a NSW Government initiative to help frequent NSW toll road users save on their vehicle registration.
Toll Relief provides one free or half-price 12-month vehicle registration to owners of privately registered vehicles who have spent over the yearly threshold on tolls in the previous financial year.
Financial year | Minimum spend for free rego | Minimum spend for half-price rego |
---|---|---|
2021–22 | $1,462 ($28/week average) | $877 ($17/week average) |
The toll spend must have been accumulated on NSW toll roads. Toll Relief is calculated on the total spend of all eligible vehicles that are linked to one personal toll account.
The free or half-price registration is valid for one eligible vehicle linked to your toll account. It's available in the financial year following the one when it was earned and must be redeemed before the end of that financial year.
If you have multiple licence plate numbers linked to your personal toll account, it's up to you, the toll account holder, to inform the drivers of the other vehicles which vehicle you've chosen to apply the Toll Relief to.
How does it work?
If you're eligible, you'll automatically be notified to apply for your free or half-price registration during the registration renewal process.
From 1 July 2021, the following Toll Relief will apply:
Toll spend | Toll Relief |
---|---|
$877 to $1,461 | Half-price registration |
$1,462 or more | Free registration |
Toll spend is based on your total toll spend in the previous financial year on one personal toll account.
Check How is Toll Relief calculated? for more information.
How much will I save?
To find out how much you can save, visit the Transport for NSW website for information on registration costs.
Can I claim my free or half-price registration as cash or a voucher? If I do not want to use it on my car’s registration, can I redeem it for something else?
No. Toll Relief can only be used to claim a free or half-price vehicle registration.
Can I opt out of Toll Relief?
Yes. You have the option to not claim the free or half-price vehicle registration during the registration renewal process.
What happens if I decide not to use it straight away? Can my discount expire?
Yes. Toll Relief must be redeemed by 30 June in the financial year following the one when it was earned. For example, if you met the threshold between 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022 you must redeem your Toll Relief by 30 June 2023.
Does the personal toll account have to be in the same name as the vehicle owner to claim the free or half-price registration?
No, it does not matter if the vehicle or vehicles nominated against the electronic tag/tagless toll account are registered in different names. You can choose to apply Toll Relief to any private-use vehicle or motorcycle as long as the licence plate number is linked to your personal toll account.
You cannot claim free or half-price registration for a vehicle that is not linked to your personal toll account.
Is it limited to one personal toll account per residential address?
No. You can have more than one personal toll account per residential address. However, you can only get one free or half-price vehicle registration per account, per financial year.
Can I transfer my toll amount to another family member, friend or another person?
No. Multiple electronic tag/tagless accounts cannot be rolled together or transferred to meet the threshold. However, you may have multiple vehicles linked to the one account to meet the threshold.
How is Toll Relief being funded?
Toll Relief is one of more than 70 NSW Government rebates and savings to help residents of NSW save on everyday costs.

What happens if I transfer my vehicle registration and have spent the minimum toll threshold amount in tolls? Am I eligible for Toll Relief?
No, the discounted vehicle registration will not be passed on to another person if you transfer your vehicle registration. Your toll spend belongs to you, the toll account holder, not the person you transfer your vehicle registration to.

You'll need to use your Toll Relief discount from your 2021–22 toll spend before 30 June 2023.
How do I apply Toll Relief to registration due after 1 July?
You can renew your registration 6 weeks before it's due.
If you're not eligible for Toll Relief at the time of registration but become eligible before the end of the financial year, you may be able to claim a reimbursement.

How is Toll Relief calculated?
Eligible toll spend is calculated as the total of all tag/tagless products on one personal toll account in one financial year (1 July to 30 June). For example, you may have 2 privately registered vehicles under the same toll account. The total toll spend for both of these vehicles in one financial year will count towards your total toll spend.
You can claim one free or half-price vehicle registration per account, per financial year.
Eligible toll spend is based on toll spend in the previous financial year. It will increase by 4% each financial year (rounded up to the nearest dollar).
The following Toll Relief will apply for free registration:
Toll spend period (financial year) | Toll spend | Toll relief period registration due |
2021–22 | $1,462 or more ($28/week average) | 1 July 2022 – 30 June 2023 |
The following Toll Relief will apply for half-price registration:
Toll spend period (financial year) | Toll spend | Toll relief period registration due |
2021–22 | $877 – $1,461 ($17/week average) | 1 July 2022 – 30 June 2023 |
Note: Journeys made at the end of an earlier financial year may appear on a toll statement. These journeys do not count towards Toll Relief. The toll spend must be in the relevant financial year.
What if the toll spend on my toll tracker does not match the spend on my statements?
All tolls that are paid on NSW toll roads will be counted unless you're registered for the M5 South-West Cashback Scheme. In that instance, your M5 South-West tolls are not counted towards Toll Relief.
The amount calculated for Toll Relief does not include money spent on:

- licence plate recognition charges
- account administration charges
- toll notice administration fees
