How demerit points work

When you get your driver or rider licence you start with zero demerit points. You continue to have zero demerit points if you drive safely and do not break any laws.

If you commit an offence that has a demerit points penalty:

  • the demerit points are added to your driving record
  • you will also be charged with a fine.

If you are a professional driver who is paid to drive for over 20 hours a week you may be eligible to increase your demerit points limit.
