Introduction

Tradesperson certificates are issued for drainers, gasfitters, plumbers, roof plumbers and water plumbers. Holders of these certificates are able to work with minimum supervision.

You can apply for a tradesperson certificate at a service centre.

Working in NSW with an interstate licence

Under the Automatic Mutual Recognition (AMR) scheme, holders of certain interstate licences can work automatically in NSW but must notify the licence regulator of their intention to work.

What you need

  • the PDF forms:
    • 'Application Form - Individual'
    • 'Checklist for Individuals' (based on the category of work you're applying for)
    • 'Additional Details Form/s' (if applicable)
  • proof of identity
  • one passport size photograph
  • documentation that meets the qualification requirements (certificates and transcripts from the registered training organisation)
  • your referee's statement (if applicable)
  • certificate of eligibility to obtain insurance (if applicable)
  • your payment.

  2. Gather the required supporting documentation.
  3. Visit a service centre and submit your application.

More information

The holder of a tradesperson's certificate cannot sign off on the work undertaken. Work must be signed off by the holder of a contractor licence or qualified supervisor certificate.

Medical gas regulations

New medical gas regulations are in place from 1 November 2020 with a 6-month transition period. 

From 1 May 2021, if you install and maintain medical gas in medical facilities you must:

  • hold a medical gas qualification
  • have 2 years relevant industry experience
  • have a medical gas work class on your licence or certificate.
