Introduction

Tradesperson certificates are issued for 1, 3 or 5-years for the following categories of work:

  • plumbing, draining and gasfitting
  • medical gas and related mechanical services.

You can apply to renew your tradesperson certificate online. Your application will be assessed to make sure you meet the eligibility requirements.

You can continue trading while your renewal application is being assessed. If your application is refused, you can no longer trade from the date of the refusal.

If your certificate has expired:

  • within 90 days after the expiry date, you can apply online to restore your certificate – you'll need to pay the restoration fee
  • more than 90 days past the expiry date, you'll need to reapply for your certificate.

Eligibility

You must: 

  • be aged 18 or over 
  • be a fit and proper person to hold a tradesperson certificate 
  • have the necessary knowledge, skills, qualifications and experience for the relevant trade
  • not be a ‘disqualified person’ under the Home Building Act 1989 or another Act administered by the NSW Minister for Building.
  • not be a current apprentice or trainee in the category of work you are applying for.

What you need

To renew or restore your certificate you will need:

  • a MyServiceNSW Account
    • you can create one when you start your application
    • you may need details from 2 identity documents (such as Australian driver licence, Medicare card, passport)
  • your certificate number
  • your renewal number (as shown on your renewal notice)
  • your fee payment.

You may also need to provide copies of the following documents in PDF, JPG or PNG format (maximum file size 10MB per file):

  • evidence of payment for any infringement notice or fine issued under the Home Building Act 1989 since your last application for a tradesperson certificate
  • if you've been convicted of any criminal offence in the last 10 years or have pending charges
  • if you're currently on probation or parole, a signed statement from your probation or parole officer including:
    • start and finish date of your probation or parole
    • what the conditions are
    • whether you are meeting the conditions.

How to renew or restore your certificate

  1. Gather the required documents.
  2. Select the 'Renew or restore online' button.
  3. Log in, or create your MyServiceNSW Account.
  4. Follow the prompts to renew a tradesperson certificate.

What happens next

When you apply:

  • your application will be assessed for approval by Building Commission NSW
  • if Building Commission NSW contacts you for further information your application will be placed on hold until you provide the information
  • you will be notified about the result of your application when the assessment is completed.
