Introduction

The design of certain items of plant must be registered with SafeWork NSW or a corresponding work health and safety (WHS) regulator.

Altered designs must also be registered. For example if a design is:

  • altered in a way that affects health and safety, such as new:
    • control measures, or
    • conditions of operation
  • altered to make a new item of plant.

Designs that only need a correction such as a typo do not have to be re-registered. Email licensing@safework.nsw.gov.au with details of the corrections required.

Note: International business entity applicants must have one of the following:

  • Australian Registered Body Number (ARBN)
  • Australian Company Number (ACN)
  • Australian Business Number (ABN), or
  • a local agent in Australia.

For more information refer to Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Eligibility

The designer of the plant or the person with management or control of the plant must register the design.

Note: If the registration holder is located within Australia but outside NSW, it's recommended that you register the design with your local state work health and safety regulator. Reasons must exist for applying in NSW.

Designs that require registration include:

  • boilers and pressure vessels categorised as hazard level A, B, C or D according to criteria in Section 2.1 of AS 4343, with some exceptions
  • gas cylinders covered by section 1.1 of AS 2030
