Introduction

Certain items of plant must be registered with SafeWork NSW or a corresponding work health and safety (WHS) regulator before they're permitted to be used.

Registration ensures the item has been:

Mobile item(s) of plant coming into NSW do not require registration if they are currently registered with the WHS regulator in their jurisdiction.

Note: An item of plant's registration must be renewed annually, and before it expires. Visit Apply to renew the registration of an item of plant for more information.

Eligibility

The person with management or control of the plant, such as the owner or lessee, must register the item of plant once it has been deemed safe to operate by a competent person.

Plant items that require registration include:

  • boilers and pressure vessels categorised as hazard level A, B or C according to criteria in Section 2.1 of AS 4343, with some exceptions
  • tower cranes, including self-erecting tower cranes
  • mobile cranes with a rated capacity of greater than 10 tonnes
  • concrete placing booms
  • lifts, escalators and moving walkways

  • building maintenance units
  • amusement devices classified by Section 2.1 of AS 3533, with some exceptions.

  4. Your fee will be calculated on completion of the online application.
  5. Submit your application with the required payment.

More information

  • A person is competent to inspect an item of plant if they have:
    • the relevant educational or vocational engineering qualifications, or
    • knowledge of the relevant technical standards.
  • If plant that requires registration is not registered, no person is permitted to use that item of plant.
