Introduction

Builders and tradespeople must be licensed to do building work in NSW. When you receive your renewal notice, you can renew your contractor licence online.

What you need

To renew your individual contractor licence you need:

  • your licence number
  • your renewal number (as shown on your renewal notice), or your full personal details
  • your fee payment.

How to renew

  1. Select the 'Renew online' button.
  2. Select 'Next'.
  3. Follow the prompts to complete your application and payment.

Renew in person

You cannot renew online and must renew your licence at a Service NSW Centre if:

When you apply:

  • your application will be assessed by Building Commission NSW on set criteria for:
    • qualifications
    • experience, skills and knowledge (if required)
    • fitness and propriety
  • if Building Commission NSW contacts you to ask for more information the processing time may increase
  • you will be notified about the result of your application when the assessment is completed.

If you miss the renewal deadline

  • If you do not renew on time you have to apply to restore your licence in person at a  service centre.
  • If your licence has expired more than 3 months, you need to apply for a new licence.
  • You cannot trade until your new licence is issued.
