Your security is our priority

We have measures in place to ensure our systems and customer information are secure. If a data breach or cyber attack were to occur, we would notify and support any customers affected. Below are things you can do to keep your account secure.

Use strong passwords

Use long passphrases that include numbers and symbols, like 'Sallys-50th-Birthday-In-Paris!' Computers can crack shorter, simpler passwords in seconds.

Use a different password for every website and online account. If one of your account passwords ever gets compromised, your other accounts will remain secure.

To test the strength of your password, go to ID Support NSW.

Turn on 2-step authentication

Add extra security to your MyServiceNSW account by turning on 2-step authentication.

Think before you click

Carefully examine emails, text messages, and websites for anything that looks suspicious. Messages you are not expecting are more likely to be fraudulent.

Be sure a message is genuine before you interact. If it’s not genuine, opening a link or attachment may be all an attacker needs you to do to let them in.

See example of a fake Service NSW email.

Be careful what you share

Some attackers check social media for useful information like birth dates, family or pet names, and addresses. With enough information pieced together, an attacker may be able to reset your passwords or even impersonate you over the phone.

Share as little personal information as possible on social media, and consider checking what personal information you may have shared in the past.

Avoid public wi-fi

Free wi-fi is convenient but it can be dangerous. Others on the network can intercept your connection, putting your messages, calls, and passwords at risk. Avoid public wi-fi where possible, and consider using your smartphone’s personal hotspot instead.

Check publicly known breaches

Details of publicly known breaches may be available at Have I Been Pwned. Enter your email address or phone number to find out if you have been implicated in a known breach.

Update operating system, software and apps

Update your software to protect yourself from cyber criminals. Check for operating system, software and app updates frequently, or turn on automatic updates on all your devices.

Check for malware

If you suspect your device, identity or accounts have been compromised, do a virus or malware scan.

If your device uses Microsoft Windows 10 or later, you can use the built-in Microsoft Defender security software to conduct a virus scan.

There are also third party antivirus options. These can offer more features than what’s included in your free, built-in antivirus.

Act immediately

Check and monitor for unauthorised account activity. If you suspect your Service NSW login information has been compromised, contact us immediately for help securing your account.

If you need help keeping your identity and personal information safe, go to ID Support NSW or call 1800 001 040
