In NSW, more than 1 million school children travel to and from school every day. To keep our children safe during school travel times, the Centre for Road Safety has developed some practical solutions such as:
- school zone flashing lights – all schools in NSW have at least one set of school zone flashing lights
- 40 km/h speed limit – motorists should drive no faster than 40 km/h through school zones, which operate from 8:00am to 9:30am, and from 2.30pm to 4:00pm, on gazetted school days
- drop-off and pick-up areas – using the designated area allows parents and carers a safe environment to drop off and collect children from school by car, and
- school crossing supervisors – these supervisors help students use crossings on roads adjacent to or nearby schools.
More information on school zones can be found on the Centre for Road Safety website.
