Media Release
Drivers, riders, and pedestrians are being encouraged to brush up on their road rules during Road Rules Awareness Week, with Transport for NSW launching seven new online learning modules to help road users stay safe.
Road Rules Awareness Week will run from 21 – 27 September and is a timely reminder for everyone to brush up on the more than 350 road rules that help keep NSW roads safe.
The campaign encourages people to test their knowledge, as even experienced road users can benefit from a refresher and stay up to date with changes that help keep everyone safe.
The seven new Road Safety Learning Lab modules cover topics including:
- driving to the conditions
- child car seat safety
- fatigue
- bicycle safety
- alcohol and drug driving
- road safety treatments; and
- misunderstood road rules.
The interactive modules use real crash data, immersive simulations, videos and quizzes to help road users better understand everyday risks and make safer choices.
With pedestrian fatalities increasing this year, Road Rules Awareness Week will also help shine a light on some of the most misunderstood road rules in NSW, including how to safely share the road with pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
From giving way to pedestrians and sharing the road safely with cyclists - the campaign encourages people to refresh their understanding of rules that help prevent crashes and save lives.
All road users can brush up on their road rules knowledge using the Road User Handbook, the Top 10 Misunderstood Road Rules guide, by visiting the Centre for Road Safety website, by taking the free online Driver Knowledge Test or the Supervising Learner Drivers Resource.
The Road Safety Learning Lab can be accessed here.
Minister for Roads and Regional Transport, Jenny Aitchison said:
“Road safety is everyone's responsibility, and properly understanding the rules is one of the simplest ways we can help protect ourselves and others every time we use the road network.
“Road Rules Awareness Week is a chance for all road users to refresh their knowledge and make sure they're up to date with changes designed to keep our roads safe.
“The Road Safety Learning Lab modules provide practical, evidence-based learning that help people understand everyday risks and the choices they can make to reduce them.
“The addition of topics including sharing the road safely with cyclists, pedestrian safety and child car seat requirements are timely topics this Road Rules Awareness Week, and I would encourage everyone to jump on and refresh their knowledge.
“Whether you're behind the wheel, on a bike, on a motorcycle or walking on the footpath, taking a few minutes to brush up on your knowledge could help prevent a crash and save a life.”
